Field Notes: Tending Agave centers agave as a living agricultural system shaped by care, knowledge, and drylands practice. This session brings together farmers and practitioners working across arid landscapes to explore how agave is grown, tended, and understood beyond distillates including:

  • Sociocultural and Ethical Dimensions of Contemporary Agave Farming explores the cultural, ethical, and ecological contexts of modern agave farming, grounded in the deep Indigenous knowledge that has shaped agave cultivation over millennia. Panelists reflect on agave’s expansion beyond Mexico and what it means to tend, grow, and share this crop with respect for people, place, and history.

  • Setting Up an Agave Farm offers practical, field-tested insight into establishing agave farms in drylands, moving beyond “plant it and wait” toward long-term performance and resilience. Farmers at different stages share lessons on species selection, farm layout, and early decisions that shape success in arid environments.

Together, these conversations invite gardeners, growers, and land stewards into a thoughtful and practical exploration of agave as a crop, a livelihood, and a shared responsibility in drylands agriculture.
